Topic:
Where to look for plays for the Six O'clock Swill
Topic type:
How we go about finding work to produce.
Here are some techniques to try. Some items on the list naturally lead on to other items on the list, like following reviews in a newspaper might lead to researching a particular playwright.
- ask all directors, actors, and playwrights you know if they have anything short and that might work for the Swill
- put a call out to things like the Big Idea, New Zealand Playwrights Association, etc.
- track what is going on in other places via online newspaper reviews/blog posts and other theatre specific websites - see related web links for specific ones (pathetically The Dominion Post and The New Zealand Herald don't cover theatre in their online editions, please complain to them!)
- get collections from theatre festivals (or at least a list of titles of "hit" plays) like Humana Festival of New American Plays, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and Short and Sweet
- research a playwright that you already know, see if they have any short works
- ask theatre companies that you respect what playwrights they like and ask for contact information
- visit libraries with decent theatre sections (Nora Miller Library at Toi Whakere and to a much lesser extent Wellington City Libraries central branch) and skim magazines such as American Theater for excerpts that look promising.
- write something!
